Plug Computer

TG Daily - Marvell's Plug Computer: A tiny, discrete, fully functional 5 watt Linux server.

Marvell announced today a new type of computer. It's about the size of an AC to DC converting wall outlet plug, but is really a full SoC with a 1200 MHz CPU, built-in 512 MB Flash, 512 MB DRAM, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 support. It runs small versions of Linux, consumes about 5 watts max while allowing remote users (presumably those authorized by the owner) to access data stored on the device from remote locations including local intranets or over the Internet. The $99 device opens up a wide array of extremely low-power, low-volume, always on applications.

20,000 "pounds" in 20 minutes attempt #twit2fit

I tried to do something to keep the weight lifting interesting and limit the amount of time spent doing it...  10 "tons" in 20 minutes, based on weight on machine X reps.  The workout took 25 minutes, but I did 15 "tons" instead of 10.

Don't walk #twit2fit

Don't WalkI walked 1.5 miles on the treadmill yesterday and 2.1 miles this morning outside.  That was enough to fire up some part of my leg on my left side.  So, for the next week, I'm not supposed to walk.  Or run, of course.  Nothing from a standing position.  Bike might be an option, but given the pain when attempted at the physical therapist's office, it doesn't seem very promising.

I bought a heel cushion (insert) for my left heel at the physical therapist's recommendation to see if it makes a difference in walking...  It does, but I still feel the pain.

If 5 nines is a myth, what is 3 nines?

Burned By Gmail Outage? Google Will (Almost) Buy You a Postage Stamp.  Apparently the SLA for Google Apps will get you 3 days if uptime dips below 99.9% for the month.  At $50 annually for the service, that's $0.41.  (Google has decided to pay out 15 days credit, anyway.)

Service credits from the SLA:

Monthly Uptime Percentage Days of Service added to the end of the Service term, at no charge to Customer
< 99.9% - ≥ 99.0% 3
< 99.0% - ≥ 95.0% 7
< 95.0% 15

That's $0.41, $0.96, and $1.91 credit for over 43.2 minutes, 7.2 hours, and 36 hours of downtime, respectively.  I realize that across an entire business, that could potentially be a thousand credits or more, but what business would see a $1.91 per user credit as adequate for 36 hours of downtime in a month?

From these two register articles, Google's email service goes down and Google blames Gmail outage on data centre collapse, it looks like the downtime was about 2 hours and 15 minutes, but there are some reports of outages as long as 4 hours.

There is a nice article on High Availability on Wikipedia to compare uptimes on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
